The Steel Structures Technology Center, Howell, Mich., has announced its spring 2010 seminar on the design and specification of welding for steel-framed structures using the AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code – Steel, the AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings, and the AISC Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings.
The seminar will include the new 2010 versions of each code, as well as related areas of research and development in structural welding. The seminar is conducted in cooperation with the International Code Council (ICC) and is oriented for structural and civil engineers, designers, steel detailers, and steel fabricators.
Seminar topics include an introduction to welding design responsibilities, welding processes and materials, welding symbols, economics and constructability, design using prequalified status, weld design values, weld and fabrication details such as backing and tabs, qualification requirements, inspection and testing, retrofitting existing structures, fatigue design, and seismic welding requirements.
The seminar is scheduled for March 30 in Elk Grove Village (Chicago), Ill.; April 13 in Meadowlands (Secaucus), N.J.; and April 20 in Buena Park (Los Angeles), Calif.
Instructor Robert Shaw is president of the SSTC and has 35 years of experience in steel construction. He is a member of the AWS D1 Structural Welding Committee and Subcommittee D1L on Seismic Welding; the AISC Committee on Specifications; and AISC TC9 on Seismic Design and TC13 on Quality Control and Quality Assurance. He also chairs Commission XV on Design, Analysis, and Fabrication of Welded Structures of the International Institute of Welding.
